U01251 U.S. CIVIL WAR UNION M1850 PERCUSSION CAP POUCH.
Originally introduced in the 1840s, the pouch for carrying percussion caps which ignited the musket cartridges was invariably carried on the right front of the waist belt. An approximately 3 1/2" x 3 1/4" x 1 1/4" blackened bridle leather pouch whose back extends to form its fold-over flap, which covers the entire front. The lower edge of the flap has rounded corners and narrows to an approximately 2 1/2" pointed tab with a stud hole, which mates with a brass stud to the bottom of the pouch. Two 1/2" wide vertical belt loops are riveted on either side of the reverse. Upon opening the outer flap, an inner flap covering the top of the body of the pouch may be seen. Impressed to this interior flap is "A.W. Decrow," "Maker," and "Bangor, M.E." Impressions resembling asterisks are to each of the short side panels of the aforementioned flap; these have no particular significance, having been produced by the tool which gripped the leather. The stiff, round-bottomed body of the pouch is lined with lambswool and still retains several percussion caps. Light cracking and chafe wear is evident to the leather, and verdigris to the brass stud and rivets. The pouch is otherwise intact, with all of its original stitching, and is still relatively supple.GRADE ***1/2 PRICE $250.00
