U00954 UNION M1850 PERCUSSION CAP POUCH. Originally introduced in the 1840s, the pouch for carrying percussion caps which ignited the musket cartridges was invariably carried on the right front of the waist belt. An approximately 3 1/2" x 3 1/2" x 1 1/2" blackened bridle leather pouch whose back extends to form its fold-over flap, which covers the entire front. Impressed to this interior flap is, within an oval border, "F.A. Sniffen Sub Inspector" and "U.S. Ord. Dept.," with "R" and "Nece" beneath it. The stiff, round-bottomed body of the pouch is lined with lambs wool. Typical cracking and chafe wear is evident to the leather, and verdigris to the brass stud and rivets. The pouch is otherwise intact, with all of its original stitching, and is still relatively supple.
