U00651 U.S. CIVIL WAR UNION SWORD/SABER BAYONET.
The unsheathed bayonet has an overall length of 26 3/8", with its scabbard being 22 5/8" long. Its contoured bird’s head pommel, with stud groove and metal locking stud, horizontally ribbed contoured grip, and cross guard with a disk finial to its forward-curving end and a circular muzzle guide to its other, are all of interconnected cast brass. "319" has been stamped to the top surface of the muzzle guide. All of the brass to the hilt is light to moderately pitted and surface scratched. The 21 5/8" long polished blade has wide fullers extending most of its length, and is distinguished by a slightly downward curve that then straightens before coming to a point. Light age darkening and surface spotting is evident. The reverse of its 1 1/4" ricasso is stamped with "P.S. Justice" and "Philada." The scabbard is comprised of a thick, blackened and varnished leather body, with its vertical seam to the reverse, and contoured sheet brass fittings to its top and bottom. The fitting to the top has raised borders, top and bottom, and a rectangular frog loop to its obverse center, beneath which are two brass rivets. Two brass rivets are in an identical position to the reverse. The lower fitting also has a raised bead to its upper edge, and dual rivets to its obverse and reverse, one of which is absent from each face. Where its upper edge is straight, its lower sweeps upwards towards the ball-capped tip. The leather exhibits the expected cracking, but is otherwise supple and undamaged. The brass fittings have an age patina, surface scratches and some light indentations. This appears to be the second pattern bayonet for the Model 1861 "P.S. Justice" rifle.GRADE ***1/2 PRICE $900.00
