U00551 U.S. CIVIL WAR UNION SWORD/SABER BAYONET.
The unsheathed bayonet has an overall length of 25 1/8", with its scabbard being 20 3/4" long. Its contoured bird’s head pommel, with stud groove and metal locking stud, horizontally ribbed contoured grip, and cross guard with a disk finial to its forward-curving end and a circular muzzle guide to its other, are all of interconnected cast brass. "487" has been stamped to the top surface of the muzzle guide. All of the brass to the hilt is light to moderately pitted and surface scratched, but still relatively bright. The 20 1/4" long polished blade has wide fullers extending most of its length, and is distinguished by a slightly downward curve that then straightens before coming to a point. Very light age darkening and surface spotting is evident. The obverse of its 1 1/8" ricasso is stamped with an "1862" date. Its reverse is stamped with "Collins & Co." arching above "Hartford" and "Conn." The scabbard is comprised of a thick, blackened and varnished leather body, with its vertical seam to the reverse, and contoured sheet brass fittings to its top and bottom. The fitting to the top has a circular frog lug to its obverse center, upon which a "C" has been stamped, beneath which are two brass rivets. Two brass rivets are in an identical position to the reverse. The lower fitting is rounded along its upper edge, front and back, and also has dual rivets to its obverse and reverse. It tapers towards its base, where it is capped by a flat-nosed tip. The leather is lightly surface scratched, but otherwise undamaged. The brass fittings exhibit an overall dark age patina. This example is very similar to the M1862 "Zouave" bayonet. Nice.GRADE ***3/4 PRICE $850.00
