U000956 U.S. CIVIL WAR, UNION CALVARY CAPTAIN'S FROCK COAT & DOCUMENT GROUPING. Very nice I'd Calvary officers grouping. William P. Wilkin enlisted as a Sgt. in Co. F, 1st WV Cav on 8-19-1861. He was appointed 1st Sgt. on 7-1-1862. In March & April 1863 he was home on furlough, but rejoined his unit in time to take part in Gettysburg Campaign. During the battle, 1st Sgt. Wilkin took part in Farnsworth's famous cavalry charge. Wilkin survived this charge only to be captured 3 days later at Hagerstown, MD, on 7-6-1863. He was taken to Richmond where he was confined until his parole at City Point on 7-23-63. After his return to 1st WV Cav, Wilkin was promoted to 1st Lt. in 8/63 & to Capt. of Co. F in 3/1864. Wilkin spent Sept. & Oct. 64 at dismounted camp in Hagerstown. In Nov. he returned to his unit & was mustered out 2-26-65, having resigned. Wilkin returned to his wife & 3 children at wars end. He died on 12-9-1871 in Hannibal, MS, after being thrown from a runaway wagon. Wilkin's frock has 9 Eagle "C" buttons: 8 BM: Extra Quality, w/top button BM: Waterbury Button Co. Waterbury Conn. Each cuff w/3 eagle "C"s wI Scovill BM. 4 eagle "C's on tail of coat: 3 BM: Extra Quality & 1 BM: Waterbury. Dark blue wool VF w/no sign of mothing. Coat has It. Streaks on back, front, & sleeves - upon close examination, nap of wool is missing from It. areas. Coat exhibits signs of heavy use in areas you would expect a daily-worn coat to wear. Quilted breast area of wool/silk blend lining. Two slit interior breast pockets. Collar lined w/blue velvet. Hand-made collar tab w/linen backing (usually where a name is written) is pinned to collar. If name was here it is now faded away. Coat has a nice set of Capt. of Cavalry shoulder straps w/worn yellow velvet fields. Gold bullion bars & single row bullion border. 100% orig. to coat. Coat originates from a well-known collection & ID is fully guaranteed. Also included w/uniform is 1) oval cropped albumen 5.5"x7.5" on 8xl0 mount of Wilkin & his wife. 2/3 length seated view in civilian attire. Cancelled tax revenue stamp on reverse. 2) Family Bible published in 1851 by Sam'l Hueston NY. Family record pages between Old & New Testaments are filled in w/names of William, his wife, & their children. Records marriages, births, deaths. Also several grandchildren recorded. Bible is in excellent condition. w/fine leather spine. 3) Civilian CDV of Wilkin, post-war. A superb group from a soldier with a great history!
