U000158 U.S. UNION CIVIL WAR CARTRIDGE BOX M1864. A M1864 cartridge box, about 7" x 6" x 1 3/4", constructed from black bridle leather with a fold over flap with an oval, olive-drab painted brass "US" plate under which can be seen the original "US" within a horizontal oval embossed to the leather. To the back of the plate is hand written "#19", "Spottsylvainia". There is a leather strap with eyelet riveted to the bottom edge of the flap that mates with a brass stud to the bottom of the pouch. Under the large fold over flap is an implement pocket which has accordion sides and a fold over flap with a leather strap that mates with a loop to the front. The inner pocket has another fold over flap which helps seal the pocket and make it more weather proof. To the rear of the box are two horizontal loops to the upper edge and two vertical loops that start under the other loops and run to the bottom edge. On the bottom to either side of the brass stud are single prong roller buckles attached at a 45 degree angle towards the center. Except for some minor scratches, surface cracking and chafe wear and a rip to the eyelet on the retaining strap the pouch is still supple, appears to have all its original stitching and is in good condition considering its age.
