U000157 UNION M1850 PERCUSSION CAP POUCH. Originally introduced in the 1840s, the pouch for carrying percussion caps which ignited the musket cartridges was invariably carried on the right front of the waist belt. An approximately 3 3/8" x 3 1/4" x 1 1/2", blackened bridle leather pouch, whose back extends to form the fold-over flap which covers its entire front. To the front of this flap is impressed, within a horizontal oval, "R. White" and "Sub Inspector," encircling, "U.S." and "Ord. Dept." The lower edge of the flap has rounded corners and narrows to an approximately 2 1/2" long, pointed tab with a stud hole, which mates with a brass stud to the rounded bottom of the pouch. Short, rounded extensions are sewn to either side of the flap near its top, both of which are becoming un-stitched. Two 5/8" wide vertical belt loops are rivetted on either side of its reverse, between which is impressed, "Lake & McKenny," encircling, "N.Y." Their brass rivets exhibit moderate verdigris. The leather is typically chafe worn, and has significantly stiffened with age. The rightmost belt loop exhibits cracking. The pouch is otherwise intact, with all of its original stitching.
