U000156 U.S. CIVIL WAR UNION INFANTRY EM/NCO'S UNIFORM BUTTON. A 5/8" diameter, gilt plated alloy button, to whose convex obverse is embossed a spread-winged eagle, with laurels in one talon, arrows in the other, and a shield with "I" within it to its breast. The "I" indicates "Infantry," and similar buttons may be found with "A" (Artillery), "C" (Cavalry), "D" (Dragoons), and "R" (Riflemen) to their shields. Around the central eye to its flat reverse is stamped "Horstmann & Co." and "NY & Phi.," the arrangement of the back mark dating it to about 1860. The plating has worn to the highlights of the obverse, and the expected light age and usage soiling is evident throughout.
