R00952 5TH SS-PANZER-REGIMENT "WIKING" PHOTOGRAPH BOOK.
A 8 1/2" x 11 5/8", hardcover, 198 page book entitled "Verweht sind die Spuren" (Scattered are the Tracks), and sub-titled "Bilddokumentation 5. SS-Panzerregiment "Wiking" (Picture-documentation [of the] 5th SS-Tank-regiment "Viking"). Its end-papers feature maps of Europe and western Russia, that to the inside of the front cover tracing the regiment’s progress from Germany to the Caucasus, and that to the inside of the back cover tracing the way back. To its frontispiece is the color reproduction of a painting of SS officers in conference upon a muddy field, with burned-out buildings and a German staff car, motorcycle and tank in the background. Prefaces from several high-ranking officers, once attached to the regiment, begin the book, which is otherwise comprised almost entirely of chronologically-arranged black and white photographs with brief captions. The majority of the images depict tanks in action in Russia, with detailed and annotated tactical maps providing context. A listing of men from the regiment who received the Knight’s Cross, Honor-clasp, and German Cross in gold is near the end of the book. Among the final pages are a listing of its officers, profiles of its armored vehicles, a chart of Russian tanks with their weak spots indicated, and a five-leaf pictorial fold-out of the regiment’s strength in February of 1944. The book is complete with its original dust-jacket, to the inside of which are printed advertisements for similar books by the same publisher. Light yellowing may be seen to the edges of its pages, and very light scratches to its dust-jacket, but it is otherwise in excellent condition. Written entirely in German.GRADE ****1/2 PRICE $106.00
