R000657 "UNIFORMS & TRADITIONS OF THE GERMAN ARMY 1939-1945," VOLUMES 1, 2 and 3. Three 6 3/8" x 9 3/8", hardcover books, the first volume having 448 pages, the second 416, and the third 640 pages, each lavishly illustrated with black and white, and in the case of the first two, a few color, photographs. The first volume begins by tracing the development of the German army from the Prussian defeat by Napoleon to the end of the second world war. Rank designations, uniform regulations, and descriptions and images of all of the various standard headgear, tunics, greatcoats, boots, gloves, etc., follow. Special uniforms, including tropical, winter and camouflage items, is next. The volume concludes with distinguishing cuff titles, shoulder boards, "Litzen," and rank insignia. Published in 1984. The opening chapter of the second volume concerns itself with special insignia, which includes trade and specialist sleeve badges, and gorgets. All of the variant cap and breast eagles are then covered, as are traditions badges and honorary cuff titles. Bayonet and saber knots are addressed next, followed by the uniforms and insignia worn by officials, including chaplains and members of the forestry service. Women auxiliaries, Organization "Todt," the "Volkssturm" (People’s army), armbands, all of the foreign volunteer sleeve shields and rank insignia, and insignia typifying the "Legion Condor," conclude the volume. Published in 1986. The third volume opens with uniforms and insignia of the German Motorized Company, "Landespolizei" and "Landwehr." Descriptions and images of standard individual equipment, including helmets, belts and straps, packs, mess items, shelter quarters, gas masks and their accessories, optics, engineer’s tools, signaling equipment, and all of the various small arms comprise most of the body of the work. A survey of fire support weapons, tracked and half-tracked vehicles, artillery, rail guns, motorized vehicles, and tanks is next. Flags, standards, personal and command flags, and musical instruments form the last chapters. An appendix with corrections to the first two volumes concludes the work. Published in 1987. Very light wear is evident to each of their covers, and the third volume has a small "ding" to its spine, but all of these first editions are otherwise in excellent condition, with such crisp pages that they appear to have been unread. By John R. Angolia and Adolf Schlicht, published by R. James Bender Publishing.
