Q000857 WEST GERMAN PARATROOPER'S HELMET.

BACKGROUND: With the end of World War 2, the USSR and the Western Allies divided Germany into four occupation zones which later became West Germany, an ally of the West, and Communist East Germany, an ally of the Soviet Union. The West German Paratrooper helmet originally used the same shell design as the M38 paratroopers helmet with an updated liner but was redesigned in 1959 using the same updated liner but with a redesigned shell with a larger visor.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A rare West German Paratrooper Helmet with camouflage netting. The steel shell is retains almost all of its slightly rough textured, olive-drab paint, to the exterior and smooth olive-drab paint to the interior with the only wear being along the slightly flared, raw edge, rim. All four, steel , vented, slotted, liner retention bolts are intact. The interior of the helmet has a light brown, nine tongued, leather liner, which is fully intact, whose headband of stiffened leather is attached to the plastic retaining ring by nylon thread that is stitched though ten black neoprene foam pads. Under the liner there are three web supporting straps that cross each other at the crown with one running from side to side while the other two run from the corners and are foam padded an are stitched to each other where they cross. There is a rectangular makers mark stamped to the underside of the liner and four neoprene foam pads have been glued there. Hand written to the liner are three names along with lines which represent the amount of jumps done by each. The helmet comes complete with a black leather construction, dual "Y" pattern chin harness with a natural chamois leather reverse. The left side of the chin harness has a pale, matte grey painted, magnetic gripper buckle with a small leather pull tab. The right side of the chin harness ends in a female snap and has two floating male buckles, one on the end piece and one around the "Y" segment, to take up the loose end. The green twine netting is held in place by six flat steel hooks that attach to the rim of the helmet. The helmet appears to have been a practice helmet as there are different names in the liner. There is an outline of a Luftwaffe eagle decal to the left hand side where someone possibly tried to pass the helmet off as a WW2 model. The helmet and netting are in excellent condition with only some age darkening and soiling to the liner and some light surface spotting to the hooks on the netting. A very nice example of a rare West German Paratrooper helmet.
