BACKGROUND:
The polish made Wz63 paratroop helmet, was of a superior design to all the other paratroop helmets used or manufactured by the soviet countries that the it became widely produced and was used by various Warsaw Pact nations during the Cold War.PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: The rimless steel helmet retains almost all its original, smooth olive-drab, paint to its exterior and interior. Three rivets for the liner suspension can be seen to the exterior along with two vent holes to each side. Around the rim is a thick padding of green leather along with green leather side flaps with ear cups and a lace up neck flap. The side flaps and neck flap are all lined with a soft brown suede leather while both of the ear flaps have ventilation holes. The green leather chin strap, about 14" long, with adjustable leather chin cup, is sewn to one flap and mates with a double "D" ring friction buckle sewn to the other flap. The eight tongued tan leather liner has multiple ventilation holes along with holes to the ends with green painted steel grommets through which an adjustment lace has been threaded. Under the liner around the headband are two layers of foam padding. Stamped to the under side of the liner to two of the tongues is "Z.A.S.IT." "Polsport" "Poznar" (a city in Poland) "12 LIP 1979" (12 July 1979) and a size to another "Zr 57" (about size 7). Stenciled to the interior crown is what appears to be "AS" along with "1/V" and "1980". This helmet most likely came from East German surplus and except for paint wear on two of the rivets and some age darkening to the front of the liner it is in unused, unissued condition.
