Q000657 SWISS M48-62 PARATROOPER'S HELMET.
BACKGROUND:
With the end of the war, Allied Armies started the liquidization of surplus helmets and other goods. The Oversea Trading Company of Anveres (Belgium) was the company that was liquidating English parachutist helmets and the Swiss needing helmets for motorcyclists and paratroopers found the offering interesting and on the 20th of June, 1948, purchased over 15,000 units at the price of 3 Francs per half dozen. The helmets were called the "Model 1948" and officially entered service on December 7, 1948. It was used mostly by mobile troops including motorcyclists, armored vehicles, engineers, drivers and paratroopers. After extensive use a replacement was considered and with the Swiss Army finding the characteristics of the old helmet acceptable decided to manufacture a new helmet based on the design of the original but with improvement to all parts of the basic design. The new helmet came to be designated the "Model 1948/62".PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A visor-less, stamped, steel helmet, with a folded steel rim which retains almost all its original rough textured olive-drab paint to the exterior and its smooth olive-drab paint to its interior. Ten rivets can be seen to the exterior, six for the chin-strap and four for the headband. To either side of the helmet are attached the "Y" chin-straps, the front piece attached to a riveted "D" ring while the rear strap is attached to a pressed steel fitting, held on by two rivets, that consists of a loop though which the strap is threaded and a bar that it is looped around. The rear strap overlaps and is sewn to the front strap to create the "Y". One of the straps ends in a single prong buckle with retaining loop while the other has nine adjustment holes. The aluminum liner mounting band is attached to the helmet by four rivets and the four tongue leather liner is stitched to the aluminum band though foam padding which is thicker at the front. There is a leather flap, about 1 1/16" wide, which extends down from the liner, from in front of the ears and wraps around the back, which has eight brass snaps that were used to attach the optional neck flap. The ends of the liner tongues are folded over and stitched to them selves to form tunnel loops through which an adjustment lace has been threaded while to the interior of each of the tongues is a small cloth pocket, about 1 1/2" high by 4" wide, into which have been inserted foam pads and are held closed by cloth ties. Glued to the interior crown of the helmet is a circular foam pad. Stenciled in white to the interior rear rim is the size "A" (Small). The helmets came in two sizes "A" and "B". Stamped in black ink to the interior of one of the tongues a Swiss shield and cross while to two of the others are some indecipherable markings along with the date "65". The helmet is in excellent condition retaining almost all its original paint with some light surface spotting to the interior while the liner is still flexible but shows some light age darkening and light usage soiling.
