Q000157 EAST GERMAN VOLKSPOLIZEI (PEOPLE'S POLICE) EM/NCO'S VISOR CAP.

BACKGROUND: With the end of World War 2, the USSR and the Western Allies divided Germany into four occupation zones which later became West Germany, an ally of the West, and Communist East Germany, an ally of the Soviet Union. With the Soviets help, East Germany formed police groups covering ground, water, air and other areas of concern circumventing restrictions placed on them by cease-fire agreements. The Volkspolizei were the East German general police force and were subordinate to the Ministry of the Interior.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A very nice, high quality, field-grey, visor cap with a dark green cloth center-band with the upper edge piped in green. The removable crowns edge is piped in green cord and to either side under the edge are two vent holes with green colored steel grommets. The internal wire stiffener is intact and there is a front stiffener, stamped with "56", formed to give a high tip to front center of crown. In the front center of the center-band is a, silver, one piece, metal oak-leave wreath with an East German coat of arms. The coat of arms shows a hammer (symbolizing the workers), and a compass (symbolizing the intellectuals) inside ears of grain (symbolizing the farmers). A twisted green chin cord is attached by two small silver pebbled alloy buttons. A black plastic visor with raised lip to forward edge is still clean and bright with a slight bend in one spot. The visor has the raised inscription "S3117/3I" to it’s underside. The interior of cap is lined in grey cloth with a stitched in clear plastic sweat diamond. Stamped in white to the diamond are "1856", "Z", "MDI" within a rectangle, "56" and "TGL 108-754 584". The wide brown leather sweatband sewn to the inside is still fully intact and supple. This cap is in very good shape with one tiny hole to the center-band and a couple of nicks to the piping.
