P10004 UNION "McDowell" PATTERN KEPI. This pattern cap was originally made popular by General Irwin McDowell & his staff shortly after the start of the war. The popularity of the cap soon spread & was highly favored amongst certain Union officers and troops by the wars end. This particular example is totally untouched and was recently discover in an attic in up State NY were it has been for the last 140 years. Cap body is constructed from a nice grade blue cloth fabric with an incredible 5 ½" front hight from the top edge of the visor to the caps top welt. Body is in excellent shape showing the standard age wear & only a few tiny moth nips. Reverse of the cap shows the typical double welt with inserts. Very nice tarred leather visor in the standard ½ moon crescent shape that gave the "McDowell" caps there distinctive look. Cap comes complete with its original Union Staff side buttons & tarred leather chinstrap with double slide adjusters. The only flaw to the cap is that it missing its sweatband, which no doubt dry rotted off while being stored in the attic. Cap still retains 90% of its original dark blue silk liner with quilted top. The kepi has the classic jaunty look.. Super hard example to find... much scarcer than the typical 58 patterns. Nice!
