P10001 U.S. CIVIL WAR UNION FORAGE CAP. The most typical Union military headwear of the Civil War was the 1858 pattern Forage cap. A navy-blue wool Union army forage cap with a stiffened crown and the early, squared, tar-coated leather visor. A 9/16" wide chin strap, also of tar-coated leather, is fixed over each ear by 9/16" diameter, convex brass buttons with the American coat-of-arms (eagle) embossed to them. A thin brass buckle is to the strap’s center, with vertical leather retaining loops to either side of it. The brass components are age dulled. Nap wear and several moth nips may be seen to the soft wool body. The visor is typically stiff and lightly surface scratched. A browned leather sweatband rings the interior, which exhibits the expected chafe wear and has one repaired/replaced section (can be seen in the interior left photo). App 60% to 65% is the original sweatband is still complete. The side portions of the lining material are gone. Cap top (liner) still retains it original rain proof oil cloth & original maker tag! (T.G. & Co). "Size No. 6," "7 1/2," "U.S. Army.," The nice thing about this example is that it still retain it original untouch Infantry bugle insignia & brass Unit number "104". Untouched & nice.
