C27655 DUTCH NSB/WA COMPANY BATTLE FLAG.

BACKGROUND: The Dutch NSB, "Nationaal-Socialistische Beweging" (National Socialist Movement), was founded by Anton Mussert in December of 1931, and in December of 1941, while under the German occupation, it became the only legal political party in Holland. The NSB’s storm troopers, the WA, "Weer Afdeelingen" (Defense Sections), were originally formed in November of 1932, but were disbanded in December of 1935 when the Dutch government prohibited political militias. On May 15th, 1940, a day after the Dutch surrender, the WA was re-activated. They were organized into ten "Heerban" (Districts), each with several "Vendel" (Companies), with each of these having their own "Stormvlag" (Battle Flag).

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A 29 1/4" square, multi-piece cotton construction flag, comprised of a triple-armed red cross against a black background, with the emblem of the NSB sewn to its center on either side. The printed emblem is in the form of a triangle, 11 1/2" along its base and 10 1/4" tall, within whose golden-yellow border is, against a background which is black to the left and red to the right, "N," "S" and "B," in golden-yellow, surrounding a shield. The shield, being the national arms of the Netherlands, is also bordered in golden-yellow, and features the horizontal, national tri-colors of orange, white and blue, against which is a golden-yellow, crowned lion rampant, holding a sheaf of arrows before him and a sword above him. To the hoist edge of the flag are sewn five loops, all 2 3/8" long, the upper and lowermost in black, with the three red ones to the center being extensions of the arms of the cross. The flag is in overall excellent condition, with only light age soiling and storage wrinkling.
