C20155 BRITISH ARGYLE & SUTHERLAND CAP BADGE.
BACKGROUND:
Every infantry or armored regiment had its own insignia. Cap badges were usually made of white metal, brass, copper or bi-metal. The history of the regiment is traced back to the formation of the 91st (Argyllshire Highlanders) , which was raised in 1794 by the Duke of Argyll, and the 93rd (Sutherland Highlanders), which was raised under the patronage of the Sutherland family in 1799. In 1881 a union of the two created what we know today as the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders (Princess Louise's).PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A nickel/silver plated stamped cap badge, about 3 1/8" by 2 1/2", which consists of a wreath of thistles with an annulus in its center. Within the annulus are the words "Argyll And Sutherland" with a Coronet of Princess Louise at the top. At the center is Cypher of Princess Louise with a boar's head, the crest of the Argylls, to the left and a cat, the badge of the Sutherlands, to the right. The reverse is a mirror image of the obverse which has double prongs and a cotter retaining pin. Of Note: The cotter pins were normally copper or brass and this being steel is possibly a post war replacement. The badge is still very bright with some minor age soiling to the recesses of the obverse and a small spot of patina and light to moderate age soiling to the reverse.
