C16453 U.S. WWI SERGEANT'S SUMMER TUNIC, SHIRT & PANTS.
An M1912 pattern, khaki-colored cotton tunic (as distinguished from the M1918 tunic which had internal pockets with only the flaps visible), shirt and trousers. The tunic features a stand-up collar, a five-button, single-breasted front closure, and four patch pockets with button-down scalloped flaps. The larger buttons to the front closure, and the smaller buttons to the pockets and integral shoulder straps, are all in dark brown painted alloy, and all have the American coat-of-arms embossed to them. Some of the buttons have light wear to their highlights. Sewn to both upper sleeves are the olive drab wool bases to khaki felt Sergeant’s stripes, being three inverted "V" chevrons. A mostly indecipherable, circular red ink stamp is to the unlined interior, which includes what appears to be "...Meyer & Co." and "New York." The tunic is in very good condition, with light staining to the front panels, and light soiling and perforations to the collar where devices had been attached. Approximately a size 38. The long-sleeved, khaki wool shirt has a lay-down collar, a seven-button front closure, and patch pockets to each breast with button-down flaps. Interestingly, it has a wind flap sewn along the interior edge of the left front panel, with three buttonholes that mate with corresponding buttons sewn to the interior of the right front panel. Each of the cuffs also have wind flaps connecting their openings, with a buttonhole to one side and two buttons to the other. All of the buttons, with the exception of the uppermost one to the interior right panel, are of tan-colored bakelite, and all appear to have their original stitching. The uppermost button to the front closure has broken in half. A serial number has been handwritten to the interior of the lower left panel, the original owner’s name to the lower right panel and beneath the collar, where there is a small, white oilcloth tag with, machine woven to it in blue, "14" over "32." The shirt has moth nips to both its upper left and right sleeves, and above and below its right breast pocket. It is also approximately a size 38. The olive drab wool, straight-legged trousers have a four-button French fly, with a fifth, larger, button at the waist, two vertical slash side seam pockets, a fob pocket beneath the right forward waistband, and two horizontal slash pockets to the rear. The buttons are of brown bakelite and appear to have their original stitching, with the exception of the lowermost one to the fly, which is of olive drab bakelite, and has been re-stitched. The seven vertical loops around the waist band allowed their use with a fabric belt. The lining to the waistband, fly, and the cotton bags are all in white cotton. The original owner’s name has been handwritten to the right pocket bag, an "X" is ink stamped to the left pocket bag, and there are letter and number codes stamped along the waistband and one of the rear pocket bags. Sewn to the underside of the right hip pocket bag is a 1 3/8" x 2 1/8", white oilcloth tag, among whose faint printing may be discerned a "31/31" size indication, and a "Phila. Q. M. Depot" origin. The trousers have a repair along the waistband, a small tear to the right knee, light fraying to the cuffs, a moth nip to the left of the crotch and the left knee, and a hole alongside several dark stains to the lower left leg. Approximately a size 32" waist.GRADE ***3/4 PRICE $ SOLD
