C14654 RUSSIAN/FINNISH COMBAT HELMET. A metal helmet, very similar in design to the French "Adrian" style introduced in early 1915, but is, as the consigner reports, a Russian helmet produced in Finland when it was still a part of Russia. Painted a light olive drab color to both its exterior and interior, the helmet features a rear and forward visor, and a triply-riveted ventilation "button" to its crown. A pair of horizontally arranged rivets are to each cardinal point of the helmet immediately above where the visor begins to flare out, which secure the interior liner. A pair of smaller, vertically arranged rivets are over each ear, which secure the interior bases of the swiveling "rings" for the chin strap. To the interior is its brown leather liner, which extends from behind the felt-covered metal headband fixed by the exterior rivets, and is comprised of a sweatband to which is sewn three triangular "fingers." The end of each finger is folded back upon itself and sewn to form a tunnel loop for the, included, adjusting tie string. Tied to the tie-string is a 2 3/4" x 1 3/8" cardboard tag, around whose grommet is printed "Oennison Mfg. Co. Eng." with "P." above and "Oknek" beneath. To the tag is handwritten the original owner’s name, above which is ink stamped, in red, "Helsingin [?]aupungin Sâhkölaitos Virranjakeluosasto, " and part of another stamp. Wrapped and riveted to the right rectangular "ring" is one end of its 5/8" wide, brown leather chin strap. The other end is looped through the left ring, and then back upon itself through an adjustable metal buckle. The leather to both the chin strap and liner exhibits chafe wear and age darkening, but is otherwise intact and still supple. The helmet is moderately surface scratched and spotted, less noticeably so to the interior, with the exterior retaining approximately 80% of its original paint.
