C14054 U.S. WW1 ISSUED OFFICER'S M1910 VISOR CAP. It was a WW1 issued cap which replaced the bell-crown model. It was used up until the 1920's. This army officer visor cap is made from khaki with brown leather lining, cap, and strap. It is 7 ½" wide in diameter. The cap badge is 2 ½" high and 2" wide. It depicts the coat of arms of the United States and it is the badge that is worn by all ranks on the visor cap. It is the American Eagle with stars and stripes on the shield that resides on the eagles chest. The eagles right claw holds laurel, while in the left claw, he holds a bundle of arrows. The scroll which is spread on the wings, has the United States Motto of, "E plubirus unum." Which is Latin for, "Out of many, one." This is a direct reference to the thirteen colonies that are united as one nation. This motto was suggested by the first great sea committee in 1776. Above the scroll, there is a round cloud with 13 stars in the middle. Again it alludes to the union. The badge is made of brass, as are the buttons on the side. This cap is post WW1 because they did not start using the brass cap badges until the 1920's. The brass buttons also have the inscription of the United States coat of arms. They are ½" wide in diameter. The markings found on the hat are, a black ink stamp on the interior, which states; O.R. SMITH. Below it, there is some silver thread writing, however, most of it is gone. It would be safe to assume that is was possibly the makers mark and date. The last marking is found on the leather liner located on the interior, which states; Capt Smith. This was hand written with black ink. The interior of the cap is stained, while the material is used and is beginning to frail, however, the leather lining is in very good, flexible condition. The exterior does have some stains, yet they are not very noticeable and there a few moth holes. Nonetheless for the age and condition, this visor cap is a very good example.
