C10554 BRITISH M1907 BAYONET. A British pattern 1907 bayonet with its Mark I scabbard and webbed canvas frog. The unsheathed bayonet has an overall length of 21 5/8". Its contoured bird’s head pommel has a stud guide and stud, and a cleaning hole drilled straight through it. Several faint stamps may be seen to either side of the pommel, one which is an "E," and another which could be an anchor or a "C broad arrow." The age-darkened, scratched and lightly pitted, contoured wooden grips are fixed with two screws. The contoured metal cross guard has a circular muzzle guide to its upper extension. Both the pommel and cross guard had evidently originally been painted black, most of which has worn away. Its 16 3/4" bright blade has wide fullers extending most of its length. To the ricasso is stamped the "broad arrow" acceptance mark used by the British government, an "X," and three crowns, one having "2L" over an "E" beneath it, another with "BC" over an "E" beneath it, both slightly askew, and the last with what appears to be a "P" beneath its crown. To the reverse ricasso is stamped "1907," "4," "‘17," and a partially obscured maker’s mark, which is undoubtedly "Sanderson." The blade has age dulled, exhibits surface scratching and sharpening marks, and has, in patches, light to moderate surface spotting. The Mk l scabbard, which is 17 3/8" long, is comprised of thick, blackened leather, whose vertical seam is to its reverse, with contoured metal fittings to its top and bottom. The fitting to the top has three rivets near and securing its mouthpiece, and, near its base, a staple fixing it to the body of the scabbard, obverse and reverse. An oval lug is to its obverse center. The bottom fitting also has securing staples, but near its scalloped top, obverse and reverse, and it tapers to its rounded base. These metal fittings had originally been painted black, most of which appears to be absent from the upper fitting, but at least 70% has been retained to the lower fitting. The leather body of the scabbard has lost much of its original, gloss blackening, but it is otherwise intact and still very supple. Slid over its upper fitting is a bayonet frog, comprised of a 1 1/2" wide, khaki-colored, webbed canvas strap, which folds back upon itself and is sewn to form a belt loop, creating a height of 7 3/4". The frog has a horizontal retaining strap sewn to the upper portion of its formed belt loop, and two broad, horizontal loops are sewn near its base, through the separation of which protrudes the bayonet lug. Light age soiling is evident.
