C09853 SOVIET 2ND CLASS ORDER OF THE PATRIOTIC WAR. The first order to be established during the "Great Patriotic War," by a decree of the Presidium of the USSR Supreme Soviet in May of 1942, in two classes. Originally suspended from a crimson ribbon, soon after its establishment the ribbon was dispensed with, replaced by a screw-back fixing. This second class version is a single-piece construction, silver and enamel award, in the form of a slightly convex, five-pointed star, whose arms are enameled in red, with a silver hammer and sickle against its encircled, red enamel center, and nine ray projections between each arm of the star. The silver rays distinguish it as a second class award, the first class having golden rays. Surrounding the centerpiece is a white enamel ring with "?G+Q+EG%+==!a %?5=!" ("Atyechyestvyennaya Voyna," or, Native-country War), and a small, five-pointed star to its base, all in silver. A sword crosses diagonally behind the star and against the rays, from the lower left to the upper right, and a rifle with a fixed bayonet crosses in the opposite direction. To the reverse, its central, threaded post and 1 1/4" diameter, convex retaining disc are both intact. Above this screw-back post is embossed ";?=+G=[y5" and ")%?C" ("Manyetnay Dvor," or, Monetary Court - the manufacturer who minted it), and a "5118613" serial number is scratched beneath it. Moderate age darkening may be seen to the reverse, but only lightly so to the obverse. All of its enamel is intact. Due to the high serial #, this example should be considered a post 1985 issue.
