C093461 (RAF) ROYAL AIR FORCE PILOTS WINGS.

BACKGROUND: During the First world War with competition between the Royal Flying Corp (RFC )and the Royal Naval Air Service (RNAS) for supplies, engines and aircraft becoming a critical problem for the war effort, Prime Minister Lloyd George turned to General Jan Christian Smuts for a solution to the problem. Smuts recommended that the RFC and the RNAS be amalgamated into a single Air Service that would be independent of the Army and Navy. The recommendation was accepted and on November 29, 1917 an act of parliament established an Air Council and an Air Force. On April 1, 1918 the Royal Air Force officially came into existence and the amalgamation of the RFC and the RNAS was complete.
