C08255 U.S. WWI M1910 HAVERSACK.
BACKGROUND:
Webbing was a new form of material made from pre shrunk, pre dyed, water proofed, cotton. Designed by a United States Army officer, Captain Mills, it was much tougher than the leather used for all previous military equipment and did not suffer from the unfortunate problem of shrinkage in wet conditions.PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A M10 haversack, made from tan/khaki canvas and web straps, about 17" tall by 10" wide, with a sewn on fold-over flap that extends another 14". To the front of the flap is a, 3 3/8" by 1 1/2" , with two blackened brass grommets, double layered piece of canvas and two web straps, 8 3/4" by 3/4", with crimped on brass ends, that are used to attach a "Meat Can" pouch. Stamped in black ink to the front of the flap are, "160", a pair of crossed rifles with an "F", "U.S." and what appears to be "I S" with an indistinguishable letter after. To the inside of the flap is a manufacturers name and date "Perkin’s Campbell, 1917." Also to the inside is a piece of web strapping, 4" by 3/8", folded over and sewn on to create a loop though which a friction buckle has been secured. Under the flap are two side flaps that fold over and meet in the center, one with three web straps, each 10" by 3/8", with crimped on blackened brass ends, that mate with three pieces of web strapping, 4" by 3/8", folded over and sewn on to create a loop though which a friction buckle has been secured, on the other flap. Sewn to the inside is a piece of canvas, 23" by 7 1/2", which has a piece of web strap, 3/8" wide, sewn on one side to create seventeen 1" adjustment loops though which the side flap straps can be threaded. Sewn on the back are two web shoulder straps, 2" wide that taper down to 1", each with secondary straps, all of them with blackened adjusting buckles and blackened spring clip hooks, ending in a crimped on blackened metal cap. There is also a central rear strap with an adjusting buckle and a blackened spring clip hook, ending in a blackened crimped on metal cap. There is light staining and aging to the canvas but all stitching is intact and the brass retains most of its original blackening.
