C07652 WWI CANADIAN UNIT GROUP PHOTOGRAPH.
A 9 1/2" x 7 1/2", black and white group photograph, glued to a 13 3/4" x 11 3/4" cardboard frame. The twenty-eight figures all wear dark, stand-up collared, single-breasted tunics with pleated patch breast pockets, leather belts and visor caps. Three of the tunics are piped along their collars, shoulder straps and cuffs. Three Corporals are to the front row, and a drum Sergeant and a Captain are to the second row. All but three of the figures wear backpacks and canteens, and many of them appear to wear cartridge pouches. The central figure in the front row holds a sign before him reading "For Britain from St Stephen N.B. 1914" ("N.B." is the abbreviation for New Brunswick, a province in eastern Canada). The lower right corner of its frame features the name of the photography studio, in "Fredericton, N.B." (Although the group is from St. Stephen, they are, in fact, photographed against the gun casement of an early nineteenth century guard barracks in Fredericton). The full name of the studio is ink stamped to its otherwise featureless reverse. The photograph has yellowed somewhat with age, the frame has noticeable age soiling, and some wear to its corners. Note, kit being worn is Canadian Oliver pattern.GRADE ***1/2 PRICE $38.00
