C06855 ITALIAN T35 GAS MASK & CARRYING POUCH.

BACKGROUND: With the development of poisonous gasses used as offensive weapons in WWI appropriate defensive gasmasks also had to be developed. The Italians developed the WWI M1916 Polivalente Z gasmask which eventually evolved into the Fascist era M31 and T35 gasmasks as used in WWII. All Italian Army personnel were issued with a gasmask, a carrying pouch and accessories and were required to have it readily available at all times. The fear of the potential use of chemical warfare agents made the gasmask a constant companion of the Italian soldier through-out the war.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: T35 pattern, molded, brown rubber construction gasmask with metal alloy and fabric fittings. The mask is well marked with embossed designation, "T.35 RS", size "II", indicating size medium, and a fleur de lis, indicating the manufacturer Sacic. The mask has dual khaki web and rayon construction side retaining straps with internal fabric covered springs and alloy fit adjustment buckles and a central khaki web strap with a pronged alloy buckle and seven corresponding alloy fit adjustment buckle grommets. All the web and fabric covered spring straps and buckles are intact. The alloy eye socket frames and snout fittings retain all of their original brown paint. One of the glass lenses shows cracking to the internal plastic separator resulting in the glass appearing to be broken. The snout consists of an upper perforated metal alloy discharge valve and a lower screw threaded, metal alloy filter attachment and intake valve. The rubber shows some small areas of minor surface cracking but is still relatively supple. The mask comes complete with an attached, roughly 3 3/8" tall, 4 1/4" diameter, brown painted, metal alloy breathing filter. The filter retains about 95% of its original brown paint with a few small surface scratches and dents. The filter is well marked with white stenciled designation, "T.35", and date, "11-1943. The bottom edge of the filter has a circular cut-out 1" in diameter which has a perforated recessed plate with 1/8" diameter holes through which can be seen the filter material. The bottom of the filter also has a small extended metal tab to which a circular black rubber plug would normally attached by a twine cord, but is missing. There is also an circular alloy, tape sealed container, 2" in diameter by 1/2" thick, which in all likelihood, contains a replacement one way valve for the discharge valve. The mask comes housed in its original roughly, 11 1/4" tall, 7 1/2" wide, tapered, coarsely woven grey/green canvas carrying pouch. The pouch is somewhat wider at the top and tapers inward to the bottom edge with a roughly 4 1/4" diameter, circular bottom panel. The pouch has a fold over top closure flap with a small, stitched on, olive drab-colored leather, vertical closure strap with a cut-out eyelet. The top flap closure strap affixes to a olive drab-colored leather reinforced alloy stud positioned on the front of the pouches body. The pouch has an integral, olive drab-colored leather reinforced, HBT weave, non-adjustable web carrying strap machine stitched to either side near the top edge. The pouch is in very good condition with minor age and usage soiling. Nice Italian gasmask and pouch in overall good condition.
