C063663 PRE-WAR BRITISH "KINGS OWN MALTA REGIMENT" CAP BADGE.
BACKGROUND
: Originally formed in 1801 as the "Regiment of Maltese Militia" and numerous name changes and a disbandment, was renamed "Kings Own Malta Regiment" in 1931 and expanded to four battalions at the outbreak of the Second World War. The Regiment provided low air defense, unloaded cargo, guarded supply dumps, cleared runways and filled in bomb craters on the airfields. Members of this regiment were often called upon to perform special tasks such as rescue and retrieval after the attack on Grand Harbour and HMS Illustrious that were bombed by the Luftwaffe in 1940.PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A blackened brass badge measuring approximately 4cm x 5cm featuring the Maltese cross central to the badge that is surmounted by the Kings Crown and wreath. A circle with "Kings Own Malta Regiment" is to the border. The bottom, upon a scroll has "MDCCC" which represents the number "1800." The reverse is flat with two lugs present. The metal shows further darkening typical of age as well as some verdigris, but overall this is a nice used example.
