C059962 "A.R.P." BADGE.

BACKGROUND: The Air Raid Precautions badge was issued between 1937-1943 to A.R.P. volunteers upon completion of their training. Their training included fire fighting and first aid. Each volunteer was expected to know everyone who resided in their sector so that they could distribute emergency services quickly and efficiently in the event of a bombing. They would douse incendiary bombs. Other duties included supervising "blackouts" to ensure that no light was visible from vehicles or buildings that may assist enemy aircraft. During air raids they aided people to reach shelters as well as compile accurate reports of each bombing incident after an "all-clear." Badges with a stud fixing were usually issued to men while those with a pin fixing were issued to women.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A blackened metal alloy pin measuring approximately 2.5cm x 4cm that shows the Kings Crown atop the letters "A.R.P." The reverse is a mirror image of the front with original fastener. Very nice example.
