C057176 "BATTLE OF MIDWAY" FLIGHT HELMET ENSEMBLE
The M450 Naval Flying Helmet was widely used in 1941-42. It was issued without communication equipment resulting in numerous configurations installed by riggers. This example was manufactured by Slote & Klein and features rigger-applied oyster-coloured leather cups and Telephonics TH-37 coms.The MSA MK III Rebreather system was introduced into Naval Air service in 1942.The rubber pipe screwed into a portable rebreather unit housed in a green canister.A hinged, spring-loaded stop-valve was situated between the hose and the mask body; it was periodically closed to flush out the system.This example is fitted with a Telephonics RS-83 Mic and a rare push to talk switch.Accompanying the mask is the instruction manual and the rare spare parts kit which included attachments for the NAF1092 Flying Helmet.The MSA MK III system was primarily used in dive bombers.AN6530 flying goggles were used extensively by both Naval and Marine Corps aviators during the war.Contracts for AN-6530 goggles were awarded to Chas. Fischer Spring Co. and American Optical.Classic set up for a Dauntless Dive Bomber Pilot during the Battle of Midway.
