C05653 BRITISH R.E.M.E. SERGEANT'S BATTLEDRESS TUNIC. A khaki wool tunic with a five button front closure, and a lay-down collar with dual hooks and eyes at the throat. There are patch pockets to each breast, whose scalloped flaps have button closures. The integral shoulder straps are buttoned near the neck. The outside seam slashes at the cuffs also have single button closures. All of the dish buttons are in olive drab bakelite, and all appear to have their original stitching. An integral belt, with a nickel-silver alloy buckle and vertical retaining loop on its opposite side, is to the waistband. "Will Not Rust" is stamped to the buckle. The back has multiple pleats to it. To each upper arm are sewn 3 1/4" x 7/8", arching, dark blue shoulder flashes with "R.E.M.E.," for "Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers," machine woven to them in golden yellow. Beneath each of these is a 2" x 1 3/8" yellow wool patch with a charging black bull machine woven upon it. This was the formation sign used by the 11th Armoured Division, raised in 1941, which landed at Normandy and fought through France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. Beneath each of these are 1 7/8" x 5/16" horizontal wool bars in red, yellow and very dark blue (although these are inverted on the left sleeve), adopted in 1940 as further distinguishing the wearer as belonging to the R.E.M.E. Beneath these, to each sleeve, are machine woven Sergeant’s stripes, comprised of three tan-on-brown "V"-shaped chevrons sewn to a khaki wool base. To the base of the right sleeve are three small red inverted chevrons, again machine woven on an olive drab base, which signify three years of service. The interior collar, waistband, and along either side of the front closure is lined in tan-colored cotton, and a large, vertical slash pocket, in the same material as the lining, is to the interior left breast. "M," a "W" and a "D" separated by a "broad arrow," and "604" is ink stamped to the lining along the right side of the front closure. To the face of the left interior breast pocket is sewn a 1 7/8" x 2 3/4" white cotton tag, upon which is printed "Battledress.," "Blouse, 1940 Pattern.," "Size No. 9," "Height 5 ft. 7 ins., to 5 ft. 8 ins.," "Breast 39 ins. to 40 ins.," "Waist 34 ins. to 35 ins.," "John Hammond & Co. (1922) Ltd.," "1944.," and a "broad arrow." A faint, ink stamped "9" may also be seen to this pocket. Two vertical button holes are along the lining to the interior rear waistband. Typical nap wear and light age and usage soiling is evident, as are moth nips to both sides of the collar, the left shoulder, the small of the back, the lower right front panel, and, most noticeably, to the right breast pocket.
