C04955 BRITISH WWI SOLDIER'S PHOTOGRAPH POSTCARD.
BACKGROUND:
Basic human instinct dictates that soldiers in the field, regardless of nationality, long for their loved ones at home. As a result it was very common for these soldiers to purchase, or appropriate, "sweetheart" items and send them home. Although there was almost an unlimited selection of "sweetheart" items one of the most popular items were the photograph postcards which were relatively inexpensive, easily mailed and distinctly personal.PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Roughly, 5 3/8" x 3 1/4", mid-weight card stock postcard with a black and white full length portrait photograph of a British soldier with his right hand resting on a wood stand and a swagger stick in his left hand tucked under his arm. On the reverse is printed "Post Card" with a "T" shaped design below which partially separates the space in half. There is a bluish "V" shaped marking, which might have been used to affix the post card to something, that obscures two printed words. Hand written to the left are two numbers, "1460" with a line drawn through it, and below it "1461". To the right is a partially obscured address. The photograph is in good shape with some age yellowing and a few small scratches while the reverse has some age soiling and to the very bottom can be seen two small pin holes.
