C04055 DUTCH SOLDIER'S PHOTOGRAPH POSTCARD.

BACKGROUND: Basic human instinct dictates that soldiers in the field, regardless of nationality, long for their loved ones at home. As a result it was very common for these soldiers to purchase, or appropriate, "sweetheart" items and send them home. Although there was almost an unlimited selection of "sweetheart" items one of the most popular items were the photograph postcards which were relatively inexpensive, easily mailed and distinctly personal.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Roughly, 5 1/2" x 3 1/2", mid-weight card stock postcard with a black and white photograph of a Dutch soldier in uniform sitting on the ground in front of some evergreen trees. On the reverse, in very nice hand written text, is a letter dated "23/1/40" and signed "Gebt Wohl". It is addressed to a "Frau Anne Jansen" in Germany. There is a "Nederland" postal stamp that is canceled with a "Amsterdam" stamp dated "23.1.40". Stamped in black ink, separating the letter from the address, is "Uitg. Fa. Luis de Jong Szn. A’dam. Nadruk verboden. Tel 92754". The postcard is in excellent shape with only some minor age yellowing, a few wrinkles to the lower left corner and some light scuffing to the photograph.
