C03254 DUTCH W.A. COMMEMORATIVE MARCH MEDAL. BACKGROUND: The Dutch NSB, "Nationaal-Socialistische Beweging" (National Socialist Movement), was founded by Anton Mussert in December of 1931, and in December of 1941, while under the German occupation, the NSB became the only legal political party in Holland. The NSB’s storm troopers, the WA, "Weer Afdeelingen" (Defense Sections), were originally formed in November of 1932, but were disbanded in December of 1935 when the Dutch government prohibited political militias. On May 15th, 1940, a day after the Dutch surrender, the WA was re-activated. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A die struck, silver-colored alloy medal, in the form of an eight-pointed star, 1 3/4" from point to point, with "N," "S," and "B" embossed to its upper three points, and "W" and "A" to the points to either side of the lowermost one. Against its octagonal center is a crown surmounting a shield, within which is an upright sword, flanked on either side by two, six-petaled flowers, with a "cross Patté" above. The background of the shield has been enameled red. To the reverse is embossed a "1943" date and "Bloembollen - Marsch" (Flower-bulb - March). A metal loop is soldered to the reverse of the uppermost point, through which is fed the metal suspension ring for its ribbon. The 1" wide, ribbed moiré ribbon is colored black along its left, and orange along its right. Its ends are sewn along its top, fixing its folded-over height at 1 3/8". The ribbon is noticeably age soiled, but intact. The medal retains at least 80% of its original silver wash, with most of the wear, unsurprisingly, to the ends of its points, although the red enamel to the shield appears to have no wear to it at all.
