C031556 WWI TURKISH OFFICER'S LIGHT WEIGHT M18 PARADE HELMET. A light weight, field grey green, mild steel helmet with a folded brass rim. This helmet is modeled after the M18 helmet with flared sides and rear but with a visor less design that was preferred by the Turkish Ottoman Empire. The helmet appears to have been pressed from a single piece of mild sheet steel with a multi piece brazed on folded brass rim. To either side of the helmet are brass ventilation lugs that are soldered in place from the inside. The helmet liner is constructed from three pieces of light, golden brown, cloth that have been stitched together and one edge folded over and stitched to the liner retaining ring and the other edge folded over and stitched to itself to create a tunnel pool though which a tightening lace has been threaded. The mild steel liner retaining ring is mounted to the helmet at the rear by being directly soldered to the inside of the helmet in three place while the front of the ring is mounted on two metal straps that are soldered to the ring on one end and the helmet on the other. On one side, under the liner ring, is a short piece of leather strap and on the other side a longer piece of leather strap that is attached to the ring by looping around the ring and riveted to itself. These could be pieces of the original chin strap. The liner is in good condition for the age of the helmet with some usage soiling and fading, a few small holes, some separating of the stitching and wear around the retaining ring. The helmet retains about 55% of its original paint to the exterior with scratches and wear down to the primer coat and base metal along with some moderate to heavy areas of surface oxidization. The interior underside of the flared sides and rear are scratched and worn with some light surface oxidization but under the liner it has a layer of oxidization that covers the entire inside dome of the helmet. Still a very interesting variation on a M18 helmet.
