C030259 BRITISH ARTILLERY TRACTOR, TRAILER & 25 POUND FIELD GUN, DINKY TOYS.

BACKGROUND: The Frank Hornby Firm, that was best known for their electric trains, began to make scale models named Modeled Miniatures, as accessories for their train platforms. These models were made in 1:43 scale to match the scale of their train sets. In 1934 the name was changed to Dinky Toys and they were made both in England and in France. Production was halted during WW2 and the first post war Dinky Toy produced was a Jeep. In 1954 the British change their numbering from a two digit plus letter code to a three digit code with the 600 series dedicated to military vehicles. Early post war Dinky Toys had metal hubs with smooth rubber tires, in the mid 50's treaded tires were introduced and by 1972 plastic tire were being used.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: This is a set of three olive green cast replicas based on the Morris Commercial C8 FAT (Field Artillery Tractor) commonly known as a Quad, with the limber trailer and 25 pound field gun used by the Commonwealth during WW2. The pieces were all sold separately, as model numbers 686, 687, and 688, or as a gift set, model number 697. The tractor, about 3" long by 1 1/2" wide by 1 7/16" high, has a cast body with open windows and a plastic driver inside. There is a spare tire mounted on the back, the grill and single headlight have been painted silver and there is a artillery divisional marker painted to the front right fender and back. The four wheels have cast hubs with treaded tires. The bottom stamped, grey painted, metal plate is held on by a rivet which also attaches the trailer hitch. Embossed to the plate is the text "Made in England", the model number "688", "Dinky Toys", "Field Artillery Tractor", and "Meccano Ltd". The tractor is in good condition with some paint wear to the highlight and edges. The trailer is about 1 15/16" long by 1 7/16" wide 15/16" high, with a tow bar to the front and a trailer hitch to the back. It has two wheels with cast hubs and treaded tires. Inserted in the bottom is a black painted stamped metal plate that has embossed on it "Dinky Toys", "Trailer", "25 PR Gun", "Meccano Ltd" and "England". The field gun consists of a carriage with tow ring, two wheels with cast hubs and treaded tires and a movable barrel with a tension spring. Embossed to the bottom of the carriage is "Dinky Toys", "25 PR Gun", "Meccano Ltd", "England" and the model number "686". The three pieces can be hooked together, tractor in front, trailer in the middle and gun at the rear, to form the train as it would have been during the war. The cast alloy hub wheels with treaded rubber tires would indicate mid to late 50's production.
