C029956 WWI CANADIAN "C38" COLLAR FLASH.

BACKGROUND: During the First World War metal shoulder flashes were used to help distinguish Commonwealth troops of different regiments and countries from each other. They were changed to cloth for battle dress in the Second World War with metal flashes only used on dress uniforms. The 38th Infantry Battalion was formed at Ottawa, Ontario on July 1, 1915. The Battalion first served as a Protective Garrison in Bermuda before setting sail for England and serving with the 12th Brigade, 4th Canadian Division in France and Belgium.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A collar flash made of stamped brass, about 3/4" wide by 1 3/16" high, which consists of the letter "C" over top of the numbers "38" which are joined by two horizontal bars. The reverse has two soldered on copper eyelets for a retaining pin. Embossed to the reverse of the "C" is the makers name "Guant London". The badge is in very good condition with some verdigris to the inner edges and some age darkening to the solder.
