C029756 BRITISH YORK AND LANCASTER "Y & L" SHOULDER FLASH.
BACKGROUND:
During the First World War metal shoulder flashes were used to help distinguish Commonwealth troops of different regiments and countries from each other. They were changed to cloth for battle dress in the Second World War with metal flashes only used on dress uniforms. Formed as the county regiment of Yorkshire-Hallamshire, the York and Lancaster Regiment were created on July 1, 1881.PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A York and Lancaster Regiment shoulder flash made of stamped brass, about 1 3/8" by 7/16", which consists of the letters "Y & L" joined by two horizontal bars. To the reverse are two brass tabs with rectangular openings for a retaining pin. The badge is in good condition with some minor wear to the front, some age darkening and staining to the reverse and small usage bends to either end.
