C029556 BRITISH ROYAL ENGINEERS "RE" SHOULDER FLASH.
BACKGROUND: During the First World War metal shoulder flashes were used to help distinguish Commonwealth troops of different regiments and countries from each other. They were changed to cloth for battle dress in the Second World War with metal flashes only used on dress uniforms. The Corps of Royal Engineers can direct descent from the military engineers that William the Conqueror brought to England over nine hundred ago. Awarded by King William IV in 1832, its motto "Ubique" (Everywhere), signified that the Corp had taken part in every conflict that the British Army had participated in all over the world.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A British Royal Engineers shoulder flash made of stamped brass, about 1 1/16" by 11/16", which consists of the letters "R E" joined at the base. The reverse has two soldered on copper eyelets for a retaining pin. The badge is in good condition with some minor pitting to the front and some age darkening and staining to the reverse.
