C029458 BRITISH MK.I DISPATCH RIDER'S HELMET.
Similar in style to the German paratroopers’ helmet, the British No.3 Mk.I Dispatch Riders’ Helmet was originally introduced in October of 1942, and remained in service until the 1960s. Its exterior is painted in rough-textured green paint, approximately 70% of which has been retained, with most of the wear, and a dent with paint chip to its crown, and paint wear to the folded spot welded rim. Painted to the left side of the helmet is a Belgian flag while to the front are painted the letters "S G’ to either side of a small castle in white on a red rectangular background. To the interior, its leather and webbed liner are fully intact, with a thick felt padding ringing the inside edge of the helmet, which is particularly built up in the front. Four khaki/tan HBT web straps, with a tie string, is to the interior crown for fit adjustment. Its natural leather sweatband is stamped "BMB", being the manufacturer’s initials, and "7," within a shield, indicating the size and "1943" indicating the date of manufacture. The liner is held in by four rivets. The dark brown leather chinstrap features thirteen buckling holes, is stitched to one side, passes through an age darkened single prong brass roller buckle stitched to the other side, and terminates with a brown-painted alloy snap closure. An extended flap for the chin runs under the chinstrap. The leather to which the chinstrap and flap is attached descends approximately 3 1/2" from the liner, is lined with brown wool, and features a seven-holed opening over each ear and a four double grommet adjusting tie slash to the back which is missing the tie. To the interior wool are sewn two white felt flaps, one to each ear. The brown wool lining is moderately nap worn, and its leather exterior is age wrinkled. The sweatband, and the remainder of the liner, is in good condition with moderate to heavy usage staining. A nice example of a dispatch riders helmet.
