C029256 BRITISH "ESSEX" SHOULDER FLASH.
BACKGROUND:
During the First World War metal shoulder flashes were used to help distinguish Commonwealth troops of different regiments and countries from each other. They were changed to cloth for battle dress in the Second World War with metal flashes only used on dress uniforms. The Essex Regiment was organized as the county regiment of Essex, England, on 7 January 1881, and included volunteer and militia infantry as well as uniting two regular battalions, the 1st Battalion, re-designated the 44th "East Essex" Regiment of Foot and the 2nd Battalion, re-designated the 56th "West Essex" Regiment of Foot.PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A brass shoulder flash, about 1 15/16" by 3/8", consisting of "Essex" held together by two parallel bars in a reverse arch. To the reverse are two brass tabs with rectangular openings for a retaining pin. The badge is in good condition with some age oxidization around the base of the tab to the reverse and some usage bends to the badge.
