C027656 FRENCH WWI CROIX DE GUERRE WITH THREE CITATIONS.
BACKGROUND: Established on 8 April 1915, the French Croix de Guerre and was awarded for individual citations for acts of bravery in the face of the enemy. The medal had different ribbon attachments depending on the command level at which it was awarded. The attachments were, a bronze star indicates awarding by a regiment or brigade, a silver star by a division, a silver gilt star by a corps and a bronze palm by the Army.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: The bronze medal is in the form of cross Pattée, about 1 7/16" across, with crossed swords between the arms and 9/16" diameter, convex medallions to the center of both its obverse and reverse. To the obverse medallion is embossed the profiled head of a laurel-wearing woman, personifying, as is scrolled around it, the "Republique Française." To the reverse medallion are the dates "1914" and "1918." Through the pierced ball to the top of its uppermost arm passes the ring for its ribbon. It has a 1 3/8" wide ribbon, which is green moire with five, vertical, narrow red stripes, and edged in red.
The ribbon is folded over and stitched to itself to form a tunnel loop though which a suspension bar, a tube and pin with ball ends, has been threaded. Attached by split pins to its front are three stars, a bronze star (regiment or brigade), a silver star (division), and a silver gilt star (corps). The obverse of the ribbon has faded while the stars and medal have an overall age patina which helps to bring out the highlights on the medal.
