C027556 FRENCH WWI CROIX DE GUERRE WITH PALM.

BACKGROUND: Established on 8 April 1915, the French Croix de Guerre and was awarded for individual citations for acts of bravery in the face of the enemy. The medal had different ribbon attachments depending on the command level at which it was awarded. The attachments were, a bronze star indicates awarding by a regiment or brigade, a silver star by a division, a silver gilt star by a corps and a bronze palm by the Army.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: The bronze medal is in the form of cross Pattée, about 1 7/16" across, with crossed swords between the arms and 9/16" diameter, convex medallions to the center of both its obverse and reverse. To the obverse medallion is embossed the profiled head of a laurel-wearing woman, personifying, as is scrolled around it, the "Republique Française." To the reverse medallion are the dates "1914" and "1918." Through the pierced ball to the top of its uppermost arm passes the ring for its ribbon. It has a 1 3/8" wide ribbon, which should be green moire with five, vertical, narrow red stripes, and edged in red, but somehow the green has faded and the red color has bled over the green making the ribbon almost completely red although the remnants of the green stripes can still be seen to the reverse of the ribbon. Pinned diagonally across its front is a brass palm, 1 3/8" in overall length, indicating it was awarded at the Army level. The bronze cross and palm have an overall age patina while the ribbon is possibly water damaged.
