C023558 WWI BRITISH, ROYAL INNISKILLING FUSILIERS BRASS SHOULDER FLASH.
BACKGROUND:
Every infantry or armored regiment had its own insignia. During the First World War metal shoulder flashes were used to help distinguish Commonwealth troops of different regiments and countries from each other. They were changed to cloth for battle dress in the Second World War with metal flashes only used on dress uniforms. The "Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers" were organized as the county regiment of Fermanagh, Londonderry, Tyrone and Donegal, in 1881.PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A stamped brass flash, about 1/2" by 2", consisting of two bars in the shape of an inverted arch held together by the letters "R. Inniskilling". To the reverse are two brass tabs with rectangular openings, a brass retaining plate, about 7/8" by 1 7/8", with thirteen evenly spaced rectangular holes for the retaining tabs, and a brass cotter retaining pin. The flash in good condition with a usage bend and light to moderate surface spotting on both it and the retaining plate.
