C023457 BRITISH NAVAL OFFICER'S SWORD.
An 1846 pattern British Royal Naval Officer's Sword with its brass mounted leather scabbard. The sword has a 31 1/2", engraved, nickel/silver plated, thrusting blade with a solid brass hilt, a white, brass wire wrapped, fish-skin grip, and lions head pommel. The unsharpened blade has a single fuller and is etched both sides with thistles outlined in rope. The one side of the blade has greater Royal Coat of Arms below a sunburst and another greater Royal Coat of Arms, just above the ricasso, with a scroll below it with the inscription "By Warrant". To the other side of the blade is a sunburst above a crowned fouled anchor, the British Naval Insignia, while the ricasso is etched with an eight pointed star with a "HW" brass circular proof mark to its center. The "HW" proof mark was mostly used by Wilkinson Sword Co Ltd. The solid brass hilt is engraved with a crowned fouled anchor and has a fully functioning hinge with locking hole to lock the blade in the scabbard. The white fish-skin grip is brass wire wrapped and has a lions head pommel with a mane that extends all the way down the backstrap. From the shape of the crown this sword would most likely have been made between 1910-1936 during the rein of King George the Fifth. The brass mounted leather scabbard is about 32 3/4" long with geometric patterns etched into the brass and two brass hanging rings one to the top brass mount and one to the middle. The scabbard is still in good condition although the leather has lost its stiffness between the hangers. The sword is in good condition with some scabbard runner marks to the blade, the etching is becoming worn, but the hilt and pommel are still in very good condition with the wire still intact on the grip. A very nice example of a turn of the century Navel Officers sword.
