C023358 WWI BRITISH, ROYAL MARINES BRASS SHOULDER FLASH.
BACKGROUND:
Every infantry or armored regiment had its own insignia. During the First World War metal shoulder flashes were used to help distinguish Commonwealth troops of different regiments and countries from each other. They were changed to cloth for battle dress in the Second World War with metal flashes only used on dress uniforms. The Royal Marine Corp was born through the formation of the Duke of York and Albany's Maritime Regiment of Foot, which was sanctioned by King Charles II on the 28 October 1664, as the first Regiment that was formed with the specific duty of service afloat.PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A stamped brass shoulder flash, about 11/16" by 1 1/2", consisting of two horizontal bars joined together by the letters "R M". To the reverse are two brass tabs with rectangular openings for a retaining pin. There is a slight deformity to one of the retaining tabs and the reverse of the flash has a dark age patina while the obverse is still fairly bright and in good condition.
