C022858 WWI CANADIAN "106 BATTALION" COLLAR DOG.
BACKGROUND:
The "Nova Scotia Rifles" was raised under the authority of G.O. 151 on the 22nd of December, 1915. Mobilized in Truro, Nova Scotia, the battalion set sail on the 16th of July, 1916, under the command of Lieutenant-Colonel R. Innes with the strength of 36 officers and 1009 other ranks. The battalion was demobilized on the 15th of September, 1920.PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A stamped blackened brass collar dog, about 1 1/8" by 1 1/8", in the shape of a maple leaf with the numeral "106" to the center of a double circle with the inscription "Nova Scotia Rifles" the bottom of which is obscured by a shield, with a scroll to either side inscribed with "Overseas", "Battalion" while below is a plaque with "Canada" all surmounted with a King’s Crown. The reverse is a mirror image of the obverse with dual soldered brass mounting prongs and a brass cotter pin. Other than a slight bend to one of the mounting prongs the badge is in very good condition with blackening to the recesses that bring out the highlights of the design.
