C022658 WWI CANADIAN "138 BATTALION" COLLAR DOG.
BACKGROUND:
The "Edmonton Battalion" was raised under the authority of G.O. 151 on the 22th of December, 1915. Mobilized in Edmonton, Alberta, the battalion set sail on the 24th of August, 1916, with the strength of 32 officers and 870 other ranks. The battalion was demobilized on the 15th of September, 1920.PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A stamped blackened brass collar dog, about 1 1/4" by 1 1/16", which consists of a "138" to the center of a double circle which has the inscription "Overseas Battalion". There are three scrolls to the bottom with the inscription "Canada", "Edmonton", "Alberta" along with a "Canadian Beaver" under the central scroll. To either side are five maple leaves with the whole surmounted by a King’s Crown. The reverse is a mirror image of the obverse with dual soldered brass mounting prongs. Other than a small spot of verdigris and a white deposit by the beaver the badge is in good condition with clean highlights and darkened recesses.
