C022458 CANADIAN WWI, "78 PICTOU", BRASS SHOULDER FLASH.
BACKGROUND:
Every infantry or armored regiment had its own insignia. During the First World War metal shoulder flashes were used to help distinguish Commonwealth troops of different regiments and countries from each other. They were changed to cloth for battle dress in the Second World War with metal flashes only used on dress uniforms. The 78th Pictou Regiment trace their beginnings back to 1871 with the formation of the Colchester and Hants Provisional Battalion of Infantry in Truro Nova Scotia. They became known as the 78th Pictou Regiment "Highlanders" in 1910 and after the First World War became The Pictou Highlanders on the 2nd of April, 1920, and carried that name until they were amalgamated with the 189 LAA Battery RCA, and The North Nova Scotia Highlanders to form The Nova Scotia Highlanders on the 1st of October, 1954.PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: A stamped brass shoulder flash, about 1 1/8" by 1 7/8", consisting of two bars in the shape of an inverted arch held together by the text "Pictou" with a single bar across the top with the number "78" to the top.
