C021957 U.S. WWI INFANTRY EM'S TUNIC, BREECHES & PUTTEES.
An M1914 pattern, khaki-colored cotton tunic (as distinguished from the M1918 tunic which had internal pockets with only the flaps visible) with M1912 semi-breeches and puttees. The tunic features a stand-up collar fastened by two hooks and eyes, a five-button, single-breasted front closure, and four patch pockets with button-down, scalloped flaps. The hooks are missing. The larger buttons to the front closure, and the smaller buttons to the pockets and integral shoulder straps, are all dark brown painted alloy, and all have the American coat-of-arms embossed to them. "Badger Mfg Racine Wis" is stamped to the reverse of all the buttons. None of the buttons exhibit any significant wear, and all appear to have their original stitching. There are two spare used buttons in one pocket also embossed with the American coat-of-arms but with "Horstman Philadelphia" to their reverse. To both sides of the stand-up collar are two 1" diameter browning brass disks with "U.S.," again against a cross-hatched background on one and crossed rifles against a cross-hatched background on the other. They are mounted through stitch reinforced holes in the collar by screw-back posts. The tunic is lined with an olive-drab cotton, has a fabric loop is to the base of its collar and a loosely stitched fabric tag with the text "Service Coats", Size 6", "Regular", "Inches", "Breast .. 38", "Waist .. 34", "Length .. 28 1/4", "Sleeve .. 32 1/4", "Collar .. 17 1/4", and "Phila. Depot, Q. M. D." and what appears to be "Gco 52" hand written to the interior collar. The uniform is complete with its M1912 pattern, khaki-colored cotton semi-breeches, tapered from the knee down to fit into the leggings. They have a four-button French fly, with a fifth, larger, button at the waist. The smaller alloy dish buttons to the fly each have "U.S.A" embossed to them, while the larger one to the waist has "U.S. Army" embossed to it. All of the buttons appear to retain their original stitching. Two diagonal slash hip pockets are to the front, with a watch fob pocket behind the right one, and two horizontal slash pockets are to the rear. Six vertical belt loops are positioned along the waist band. Passing through the belt loops is the original canvas web belt with a brass tip to one end and a blackened alloy friction buckle to the other. The inside of both thighs are reinforced with matching wool patches, each with six parallel rows of chevron-shaped stitching to them. There are ten, tan-colored alloy grommets to each side of the 8" vertical openings to the outside seams of each of the cuffs, with what appears to be their original laces fed through one of them. The lining to the waistband, fly, and the cotton bags are all in white cotton. Sewn to the underside of the right hip pocket bag is a white oilcloth tag with the text "Phila Quartermaster", "Intermediate Depot", "Inspected by" and in red numbers a "30" above a "25". The is a partially illegible stamp across the tag part of which reads "H. Bohm". The two cotton puttees, one about 122" by 1 1/4" and the other about 164" by 1 1/4", are slightly tapered at each end. The tunic has light to moderate usage staining and a couple of pulled stitches and loose threads but is still in good condition. The breeches have some minor age staining but are in almost unused condition while the putties have some age staining.
